Officer Clarence W. Dean Los Angeles Police Department, CA Motor Officer Dean, 46 had left his Lancaster home and was on the freeway headed for work within minutes of the powerful 4:31 a.m. earthquake, even though his shift did not start for more than two hours, " I can only assume that was hurrying on in because of the earthquake," said Lt. Bob Normandy. Dean was killed when he rounded a bend on the transition road from the Antelope Valley Freeway to the southbound Golden State Freeway. A section of the elevated road had collapsed in the quake, and Dean could not stop before plunging 30 feet off the severed highway. |

Yates Harris County Sheriff's Department, TX Deputy Yates, 43, was killed when his motorcycle was struck head on by a pickup truck which was passing other traffic on a foggy night. Deputy Yates was thrown from his motorcycle and killed instantly. He had been with the agency for nine years and is survived by his wife, two daughters, son, and grandson. |
