CST. Archille Lepine
Royal Canadian Mounted Police - Surrey BC
On Sunday, July 15, 1962, CST. Lepine was travelling south on the Trans-Canada Highway towards Cloverdale, British Columbia. It was 12:20 in the morning and there was little traffic on the road. The four-lane undivided highway was clear and dry. Visibility was good. CST. Lepine's speed on the motorcycle was approximately 45 miles per hour as he went up Pederson Hill in the outside lane. Coming towards him on the inside lane was a 1953 Meteor delivery truck driven by Lawrence McInnes. As McInnes approached the intersection at Ravine Road, he put on his left turn signal and, at a very moderate speed, began to turn left across the double lines to go down Ravine Road. This put him directly in Lepine's path. Apparently he didn't see Lepine coming and Lepine didn't see him turning. Witnesses said that Lepine made little attempt to stop or swerve; he seemed to drive right into the right side of McInnes' truck. The point of collision was directly on the right front door post. Lepine's head struck the roof of the truck just above the drip moulding. Then it slid down into the windshield tearing his helmet from his head and causing extensive lacerations. After the initial impact, the bike hurled down the roadway in a shower of sparks with Lepine entangled with it.
