Officer William J. Bowman

Officer Bowman died of injuries he received when he fell from his motorcycle. Officer Bowman was responding to a report of a robbery in progress and the corner of Sixth avenue and Geary Boulevard. As Officer Bowman approached the intersection he turned sharply to avoid an approaching radio car and fell from his motorcycle. 

Officer Bowman had been with the agency for five years and was survived by his wife and daughter.

Constable Carl Gray

On April 26, 1948 Constable Gray was operating a police motorcycle on Princess St. in Kingston. While attempting to pass a vehicle his motorcycle struck a patch of oil, swerved and struck an unpaved area. He was thrown from the vehicle and struck his head on the pavement. He died four days later in hospital.

Trooper Conklin was killed while pursuing a speeding vehicle. He attempted to pass a vehicle so he could catch up with the speeding vehicle and was forced into the center divide and thrown from his motorcycle.

Police Officer Thomas J. Burns
Baltimore City Police Department, MD
Officer Burns was killed in a motorcycle accident while on duty. 
Officer Burns had been with the agency for one year and had served in the United States Army during World War II.

Officer Robert J. Baker
Indianapolis, IN
Officer Robert J. Baker, a motorcycle officer, had a running feud with 19-year-old Herbert Bobb who was terrorizing a south side neighborhood by driving his "hot rod" at high speed.  On the evening of October 2, 1948, Bobb was waiting for Officer Baker as Baker was riding his cycle north on Shelby Street.  Bobb pulled his car out onto Shelby from Calhoun Street, directly in front of Baker's motorcycle.  Baker struck Bobb's car broadside and was thrown from his cycle.   He landed on his head and died within a few minutes.  Bobb fled the scene, but was apprehended six days later and confessed that he was the one involved.  He was sentenced to three years in prison for manslaughter.

Sergeant Tucker was struck by another vehicle at Monroe Street and South Congress Avenue while riding his police motorcycle. He had been with the agency for two years.

Police Officer Francis X. Carver
Beverly Hills Police Department, CA
On November 19, 1948, Officer Carver lost control of his motorcycle during a high speed pursuit of a traffic violator and was fatally injured.
