Sergeant Bruce Mathews - NH State Police

My name is Bruce Mathews, I am Sergeant with the NH State Police. I am currently the Commander of the NH State Police Motorcycle Unit. Our primary function is traffic enforcement, aggressive driver apprehension and gang details. We currently have 8 motor officers. In 1999, we made over 8,000 motor vehicle stops for a variety of offenses. We also performed a number of public relations events to include parades, VIP escorts, static displays and more. The NH State Police originally began with Harleys in 1937. The motors were phased out in 1938, being replaced by cruisers. The motorcycle unit was re-introduced in 1978, using the Kawasaki KZ1000 Police Special. We have continued to utilize the Kawasaki since then. We currently have 4 '98's, 2 '97's, 1 '96 and 1 '94 issued to motor officers. We also have four spare bikes, primarily used for training. They include motors from 1988 to 1992. We also have one of the original 1978's in storage.

The bikes are painted in a two-tone fashion. Forest green and tan. The colors are the same as our cruisers. The forest green symbolizes the heavily wooded state of NH. The tan is symbolic of the granite found in NH (hence the nickname, the "Granite State"). Our uniforms are similar. A forest green shirt with tan pants. In addition our summer uniform has 9 brass buttons. That is because NH was the ninth state to ratify the constitution. Our winter uniform has 13 brass buttons. To symbolize NH as one of the original 13 colonies. I have enclosed a couple of pics of our police bikes.

Also we have a 100% law enforcement only police motorcycle club. It is called the Road Dawgs Motorcycle Club. Consisting of State, local and County police, it is open to full or part-time officers, retired or disabled. Most of our members are also motor officers for their respective departments. Off duty, most of us ride Harley Davidson Police Road Kings, the FLHPI model. We currently have chapters in NH, MA, NY and PA. Have fun, be safe and keep the shiny side up.
